The Ukrainian Sustainable Fund (UASIF) is proud to announce a strategic partnership with I.P.Cert and Climate Forest Initiatives. Together, we are launching an ambitious project for the conservation of Ukraine’s self-forested forest areas, aimed at generating revenue through carbon credit sales.
Forests are a colossal natural resource for Ukraine, yet our ecosystem has suffered unprecedented losses due to the full-scale invasion. According to the recent estimates by WWF, nearly 30% of Ukraine’s forests have been damaged during the war, with 220,000 hectares of forest land burned in 2024 alone.
While it is widely understood that overcoming the environmental crisis requires preserving and expanding forest areas, Ukraine continues to lose a precious natural asset every day: self-sown forests that have grown naturally over recent decades on abandoned lands. Currently, these self-forested areas are not only unprotected — in fact, legislation obliges landowners to clear this timber to ensure the land is used according to its agricultural designation.
Without preserving self-sown forests, we cannot seriously discuss the reforestation of Ukraine. Our project brings these forests under protection and implements a sustainable forestry management system. This allows us to preserve vulnerable ecosystems and stimulate their growth, sequestering carbon and preventing emissions that would otherwise result from clearing these trees.
The UASIF team has long been working to integrate Ukraine into global carbon markets. Today, the voluntary carbon market is valued at approximately $2 billion, but this is just the beginning. Due to increasing corporate climate commitments and the massive demand for energy particularly driven by AI development, analysts predict a surge in demand for high-quality carbon credits this decade.
Ukraine has missed these opportunities for too long, despite them being a powerful tool for the country’s green recovery. Our self-forested conservation project aims to change that.
📍 Project Overview: The project is launching in Western Ukraine. By protecting trees that would otherwise be felled, we enable them to continue sequestering carbon, allowing us to generate certified carbon credits.
✅ Local communities are the primary beneficiaries. The forests remain in their ownership, becoming a source of “green” investment. This significantly enhances the attractiveness of these credits: buyers are not just offsetting emissions; they are directly financing the sustainable development of Ukrainian communities. This “win-win” model, combining climate action with socio-economic impact, represents the highest quality standard in today’s global carbon market.
🤝 We are grateful to Oksana Prosolenko (I.P.Cert) and Vasyl Poluiko (Climate Forest Initiatives) for their partnership and shared vision.
The project is developing rapidly, and we are moving toward official registration. The first issuance of carbon credits is on the horizon, so stay tuned!
