Why does deforestation affect soya exports to the EU?

This and more was discussed at a workshop held on 25 September for Spike Brokers. The workshop focused on the implementation of the EU Regulation 2023/1115 (EUDR), which will come into force on 30 December 2024. The main goal of this regulation is to combat deforestation and forest degradation caused by the expansion of agricultural lands.

What to know about the EUDR:

The regulation covers seven commodities: palm oil, soya, cocoa, coffee, timber, rubber and beef. All of these products are closely linked to deforestation and forest degradation.

Requirements for producers and operators: Producers must confirm the legal origin of their product. Operators must collect geolocation data for each batch of goods to confirm that the product has not led to deforestation after 2020. This traceability system is mandatory, adding transparency to the supply chain.

Due diligence: Operators and traders must carry out due diligence, including risk assessments. If there is a risk of non-compliance, measures should be taken to mitigate it. For example, companies should ensure that their products do not come from high-risk deforestation areas.

Country risk classification: The European Commission has developed a risk assessment system that classifies countries by risk level (high, medium, low), allowing for the application of appropriate measures to reduce risks.

Worrying statistics:

From 1990 to 2020, about 420 million hectares of forest were lost globally—an area larger than the European Union

– Every year, 10 million hectares of forests are cut down, accounting for 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

– The EU imports products responsible for about 10% of global deforestation.

🌟 The I.P.Cert team supports the new standards and is ready for the challenges ahead. Together with our partners, we are directing our efforts towards ensuring the sustainable export of agricultural products from Ukraine to the EU and the world, while adhering to the environmental requirements of the EUDR.
