4th EU Carbon Removal Expert Group meeting

Latest Climate Developments! Our experts are keeping track of updates regarding discussions on the framework for carbon sequestration certification conducted by the European Commission.

The fourth meeting of the Carbon Removal Expert Group (4th EU Carbon Removal Expert Group meeting) took place from April 15 to 17 and served as a significant source of information for the Living Cropland initiative, currently in development. During the discussions, experts extensively examined the European certification system for permanent carbon sequestration, carbon farming, and reviewed the concept of methodology for permanent carbon sequestration and long-term carbon storage.

These new standards define verification, certification, and registration procedures, which will be pivotal for any EU climate policy and member countries aiming for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). These framework methodologies could become a global standard and be adopted by many countries worldwide.

Opening the event, Christian Holzleitner emphasized:

  •  Monitoring should be based on an appropriate combination of on-site measurements, remote sensing, or modeling in accordance with established rules in the certification methodology.
  •  Regarding measures within Carbon Farming, where feasible, data collection should be based on Approach 3 methodology in accordance with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines and compatible with approaches used in national GHG inventories.
  •  Quantitative assessment of carbon sequestration should be conducted in accordance with relevant, conservative, accurate, comprehensive, consistent, comparable, and transparent principles, considering uncertainties in a conservative manner, based on the latest scientific evidence.
