Climate change: New horizons with NO-TILL and STRIP-TILL

Global climate change and environmental problems related to soil degradation necessitate an accelerated change in the traditional farming system and require the introduction of regenerative practices in agricultural production. The Concept of “Sustainable Ecological and Economic Development” is currently the official strategy of the global development of mankind within the framework of the UN. At the National University of Life and Environmental Studies of Ukraine (NUBiP), at the Department of Agriculture and Herbology, the course “NO-TILL and STRIP-TILL farming systems” has been developed for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, which is aimed at studying modern farming systems.

The program of this course is developed on the basis of modern scientific developments of foreign and domestic scientists on conservation farming systems and the best experience of farmers in their practical implementation. As a part of the methodological support of this course, the first training manual “Conservation farming systems: No-till and Strip-till systems” was prepared in Ukraine. Scientists, university teachers, experts in conservation agriculture of FAO and successfully practicing No-till farmers of Ukraine participated in the preparation of this manual. As part of the practical training program, students will learn in detail about 15 successful practices of implementing conservation technologies, which have been used by farmers for many years. “This course allows students to gain not only theoretical knowledge at a high level, but also to acquire practical skills in the implementation of the main provisions of conservation farming systems in Ukraine” – reports Mykola  Kosolap,  Candidate on agricultural sciences, Associate Professor of NUBiP of Ukraine.
